Independent audience research

How does South Africa actually watch anime and animation?

We are mapping the real behaviour behind fandom here — where people watch, what they pay for, and where legal access keeps failing them. Your answers are anonymous and used only for this research.

Why take part

Your answers change what gets built

This research feeds directly into decisions about pricing, catalogue and features for anime and animation access in South Africa. Nobody is guessing on your behalf.

Eight minutes, on your phone

Six short sections, mostly tap-to-answer. Your progress is saved automatically, so you can stop and come back.

Anonymous by default

No account, no login, no tracking of who you are. You only share contact details if you opt into a paid-time focus group.

What we ask about

What you watch

Anime, African animation, Western and Asian animation, films and family titles — how often, and on which services.

What gets in the way

Availability gaps, subscription sprawl, pricing, subtitles, dubbing and release delays.

What would be worth paying for

Features, pricing shapes and the one thing a new platform would need to get exceptionally right.

Who this is for

Viewers, readers, gamers, cosplayers, artists, animators, creators, industry people and parents choosing content for their kids. Casual and hardcore alike — we need the whole spread, not twenty-four nearly identical superfans.

Questions people ask

Do I need to be an anime superfan?
No. We need casual viewers as much as hardcore fans — including people who mostly watch Western or African animation, and parents choosing content for their kids.
What happens to my answers?
They are stored securely and used only for this research. Results are reported in aggregate, never as individual responses.
What is the focus group?
An optional 75-to-90-minute discussion, online or in person. Volunteering is separate from agreeing to receive updates, and you can say maybe.
Can I share the survey?
Please do. Share the single survey link or QR code with anyone who might want to take part.
